Lavender Oil Distillation
Red Barn Lavender distills our quality oils and hydrosols from lavender plants grown here on the farm with no use of sprays, pesticides or other inorganic treatments. The essential oils are 100% natural and complete: they have not been adulterated with added oils, alcohol, or other chemicals; they have not been stripped or redistilled. We use the lavender essential oil and hydrosol to make our soaps and lotions, providing them with lavender’s natural qualities. Lavender is distilled using the ‘dry steam’ method, meaning the plant material is not immersed in water during distillation. The lavender flower heads are sealed into a large stainless steel drum. Steam is slowly piped into the drum with minimal pressure to keep the temperatures as low as possible. This method produces the highest quality essential oil and hydrosol. The steam, carrying the water-soluble parts of the lavender plant and the oils, cools and condenses, separating into hydrosol and the essential oil. Lavender oil has been used for centuries as an antiseptic, burn and scar treatment, insect repellant, and aromatic ingredient for perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, lotions, and household products. The oil is also known for its calming properties. It is used in massage treatments, and to promote restful sleep. Lavender hydrosol has a minute amount of essential oil plus all the water-soluble parts of the lavender plant. It contains a diluted form of the same qualities and can be used in much the same way as the essential oil.
